Got the transmission pan back on and did some more tinkering on the cooling system. The old temperature sender was a PITA to remove, but the bigger PITA?

     The one on the right is the replacement from RockAuto. That's not gonna work.

On the left looks like NPT. The right kind of does too. That indicates the biggest problem may be the electrical wire mismatch, if the resistance properties are the same.

There’s not much room between the head and the firewall, so I don't really want to use adapters, but it may be worth a try.

The one on the right looks like a straight thread so you may need a crush washer to seal it.  Might want to switch to a two wire sensor (includes ground) for more less reliance on engine ground.

If I recall correctly, capillary gauge sending units often come with a collar to adapt to the larger size, and I believe are standardized on NPT, so I would expect these to be the same two sizes.

You might be able to use a brass bushing reducer to make it fit.
